This study was conducted to determine the strategies that are significantly associated with samples who have superior and limited knowledge of L2 vocabulary. To achieve the objectives that have been selected, this study has used 2 methods to collect information related to this study, namely questionnaires and interviews. A total of 30 students answered the questionnaire provided in the form of Google Form and a total of 6 individuals who came from 3 levels of their English proficiency namely Excellent (2), Average (2), and Poor (2) were interviewed. A questionnaire was used to identify the level of the way those non-English major UMS students learn English vocabulary and their opinions about vocabulary. Interviews were conducted to obtain information related to the strategies used by each of the levels to learn English vocabularies and also to see what they think about learning English vocabularies. Research also shows that English vocabulary can be learned using various methods. The results of the study also proved that strategies given by students were different from the reviewed article because most of them were not linguistically-motivated strategies.

Not  many people  know  what  crosslinguistic  transfer  is.  Not only  that,  we may not  even know  what  is  the  effect  of  this  theory.  In this  report,  we  will demonstrate  the  crosslinguistic  transfer  that  occurred among university students  in  Malaysia.  The  first  objective  that  we want  to  achieve  for  this research  is  the  positive  and  negative  cross-linguistic  transfers  faced  by university’s  students  in learning English in writing.  The  second objective is  the  factors  that  contribute  to  negative  cross-linguistic  tran sfer in studying English  and how  to  minimize  the  negative  cross  linguistic transfer.  There  are  two methods  on how  to find  the  result  where  we organize  oral  interviews  and  writing tasks.  The  results  of  this  research in terms  of  students'  positive  transfer  is  that they  are  transmitting  similar linguistic  features  from  L1 to L2 while  for  the  negative  is  the  students  are integrating  L1 and L2 grammar  concepts  that  are  different  for  both languages.  The  factors  that  contribute  to negative  cross-linguistic  transfer in  studying English  is  they  tend  to  mix  language  between  Malay  and English  as  they  live  in a  multicultural  society  and they are  also unaware of  the  cross linguistic  transfer.  So,  we suggest  that  the teachers  can minimize  the  cross-linguistic  transfer  by creating a  fun  but  memorable teaching  class.

University  Malaysia Sabah  (UMS)  student are  currently  facing a new  phase of  education where  teaching  and learning  sessions are  done  through  online learning.  This  situation  requires  students  to  use  their  communication  abilities optimally to understand and master the  knowledge  learned.  However,  there is a  problem that  could arise  from  this  situation such  as  a  miscommunication can happen during communicating with one  another.  This  study investigates the  type  of  communication strategies  (CS)  often used by university students, explore  how  language  proficiency affect  the  used  of  communication strategies  in oral  communication using  second  language  and discover what communication  problems  university students  often  face.  An  online  survey was distributed among 30 University Malaysia  Sabah (UMS) students  and an interview  was  conducted with six other UMS students which consist of  three TESL  students  and  three  non-TESL students.  The  result show  that,  UMS students  used circumlocution, self-correction,  f iller/hesitation, approximation/generalization in a  very high rate.  The  students  faced problem such as inability  to  communicate properly when they are emotionally unstable and  having  the  tendency to  have  different perception with  group  members. Meanwhile, the language  proficiency has  a direct affect  towards  the used  of communication  strategies  in  oral  communication  such  as  high  language proficiency  student is  less  hesitant in  their  communication. From  this  result we  conclude that communication strategy has  direct impact towards  student communication  and very important  for  student  in order  to  communicate effectively  and  help in the  learning  process.  The  strategies  help them  to overcome their communication  problem  and  enhance the clarity  and  meaning delivery in the  communication.
