dc.description.abstract Salad dressing is a kind of sauce that can incorporate mayonnaise or vinaigrette with additional ingredients to make a seasoning or topping that can be tossed with salad greens or other salad elements being prepared. Salad sauces, as they are often known, have developed into a wide range of styles and variants that include both modern ingredients and traditional recipes. They can be purchased as commercially prepared dressings or as homemade dressings. In the past, well-known recipes for dressings including mayonnaise, thousand island, vinegar and oil, and Russian dressing were passed down through generations. To improve and bring out flavours in the dish being dressed, however, fresh iterations of traditional recipes continue to be developed utilising a range of components. en_US
