Abstract:
Mamut Mine or Mamut Copper Mine (MCM) is a former copper and gold mine located in Ranau district, Sabah, infamous for allegedly polluted major rivers in Ranau district (Sungai Pangkatan, Bongkud, Lohan and Langanan. It is considered as a legacy for nature conservation in the future. The former Mamut Mine has brought water pollution problems around Ranau district (Ali et al., 2015; Ali et al., 2004). It affects the economy of the population in terms of crop yields and drinking water sources along the river route that is polluted by the former mine (Ali et al., 2004). The former Mamut Mine brings opportunities in terms of economic generation for the population, including educational and recreational tourism around the areas. Respondents suggested training programs for youth regarding business and management of homestays, accommodation and hospitality. This includes marketing,
entrepreneurship and digitalization training programs. Respondents also suggested the participation of government agencies, private sector, industry players, stake holders, academics and users regarding cooperation to empower the hospitality industry. It has also been suggested for Mamut to be a recreation center, a co- creation strategy of entrepreneurs with stakeholders to elevate the former Mamut Mine as a legacy and history towards sustainable water resource conservation.
