dc.description.abstract The Chinese government has put in place a lot of digital surveillance in Xinjiang. One important element of this system is the Integrated Joint Operations Platform (IJOP). Large volumes of data are gathered and analysed from a variety of sources, including as social media interactions, online activity, and physical movements monitored by security cameras and other monitoring equipment. The system focuses on actions and conduct that the authorities deem questionable, like visiting particular websites, utilising particular applications, or corresponding with individuals overseas. Internet security is a serious concern, even in big cities like Beijing. Tech companies have apparently been hired by the Beijing city government to break encryption on services such as Apple's AirDrop in order to monitor and stop the distribution of politically sensitive information, including protest messages (MIT Technology Review). The extent to which the government will go in order to keep control over the internet and stifle opposition is demonstrated by this degree of surveillance. en_US
