Exploring The Changes in SPA operation Pre, During, and Post Covid-19 Pandemic in Wellness Industry

Abstract

This research investigates the changes in spa operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on three selected establishments: Calamansi Beauty and Reflexology, Sunset Kinabalu Massage, and Sense Garden Reflexology and Spa. The study examines how these businesses have adapted their operations to navigate the challenges posed by the pandemic within the broader context of health and wellness tourism.

A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilising interviews and narrative analyses to gather in-depth insights. By capturing the perspectives of spa owners or their representatives, the research aims to uncover the experiences, adaptations, and challenges faced by these establishments during different phases of the pandemic. This narrative approach enables a comprehensive understanding of the lived experiences within the wellness industry.

The study also highlights the significant impact of COVID-19 on the wellness industry, particularly on operational protocols and service delivery. Through interviews, the research captures stories and narratives that reflect the resilience, creativity, and tangible changes implemented by spa operations to address pandemic-related challenges.

By aligning with the inherently human-centred nature of the wellness industry, this research contributes to an understanding of how spa businesses navigate crises, providing valuable insights into their adaptive strategies and the broader implications for the health and wellness tourism sector.
