Abstract:
Anaemia is a global public health issue affecting 2 billion people worldwide. It is a condition in which the capability of red blood cell (RBC) carrying oxygen is reduced, resulting in an insufficient oxygen supply to meet the individuals’ physiological demand.
The most common type of anemia is iron deficiency anemia (IDA) followed by anemia of chronic disease (ACD). The reference method for detecting iron deficiency is by assessing bone marrow iron stores using Perls’ Prussian blue staining. Modern hematology analyzers able to measure a multitude of different parameters, which allow fast and detail picture of the anemic status of a patient. It can be used for anemia management and can help to guide clinicians in their decision on therapy and monitoring treatment response.
