Abstract

This Open Learning Resource presents an Excel-based Anaemia Calculator designed to support healthcare providers in the diagnosis and management of anaemia, with a focus on maternal health and primary care settings. The tool enables rapid classification of anaemia severity based on haemoglobin levels, differentiation between iron deficiency anaemia and thalassaemia trait using the Mentzer Index, and identification of iron deficiency subtypes. It further supports clinical decision-making by incorporating a weight-based intravenous (IV) iron dose calculator using CosmoFer, along with infusion rate and duration guidance to ensure safe and effective administration. By automating complex calculations and providing structured outputs, the calculator reduces error, enhances clinical efficiency, and aligns with current clinical guidelines. It is especially valuable for healthcare settings where timely anaemia correction is critical, such as in antenatal care.
