Abstract:
Background:
Anaemia in pregnancy and general practice remains a major health concern requiring accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment. Manual calculations for anaemia severity, iron indices, and dosing can be time-consuming and prone to errors.
Objective:
This Excel-based Anaemia Calculator V2.0 was developed as a decision-support tool to aid healthcare professionals in diagnosing and managing anaemia efficiently in clinical practice.
Methods:
The calculator integrates WHO criteria for anaemia classification, a Mentzer Index calculator for differential diagnosis between iron deficiency anaemia and thalassaemia trait, and iron study interpretation. It also provides automated calculations for intravenous iron requirements and infusion protocols based on standard formulas. Data entry is simplified through designated grey input boxes, while outputs are generated instantly.
Results:
The tool streamlines anaemia assessment by combining multiple diagnostic and management functions into one platform. It reduces calculation errors, saves time, and provides standardized guidance for anaemia management, particularly in pregnancy.
Conclusion:
The Anaemia Calculator V2.0 is a practical, user-friendly tool for primary care physicians, obstetricians, and healthcare trainees. By automating anaemia-related calculations and treatment protocols, it enhances clinical efficiency, supports guideline-based care, and may improve maternal and patient outcomes.
