Abstract:
UMS-ALIEN (Active Learning in Engineering Education) is an innovative framework
developed by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to transform engineering education. It
introduces a progressive, 10-level hierarchy that transitions teaching from traditional
methods to active, blended, and cooperative learning. By integrating tools like Moodle,
Aspen HYSYS, and MATLAB, UMS-ALIEN fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and
problem-solving. Implemented across various engineering courses, it enhances student
engagement and technical skills while equipping educators to become facilitators of
participatory learning. Recognized internationally for its impact, UMS-ALIEN is a
scalable, future-ready model that bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and
real-world engineering challenges.
